Regularly scheduled work across West Wight

We plan West Wight working days in advance, giving Freshwater and the towns beneath Tennyson Down the same qualified team and confirmed appointments as every other part of the Island. Bruce has over 15 years of hands-on experience and detailed knowledge of exposed western gardens.

The chalk backbone at the west end of the Island creates thin, free-draining soil. Tennyson Down rises directly from the Bay, exposing trees and hedges to strong westerly winds from the Channel. These conditions can produce uneven crowns and increase the risk of winter failure in leaning or heavily loaded limbs. We reduce wind loading in suitable trees, thin crowns and restore hedges to an appropriate profile. Every tree cut follows BS 3998:2010.

We acknowledge enquiries the same day, arrange a site visit within two working days and typically provide the fixed written quotation within 24 hours of assessment. Some trees around the Bay are within a conservation area, requiring notice to the council before work; we manage that process with you. Fencing, clearance or landscaping can be assessed during the same visit as the tree work.

Wind-resilient tree and hedge care

Exposed downland gardens take the wind off the Channel, and it leaves trees leaning and thin on one side. We prune for wind resilience and keep hedges to a height they can hold.

Your questions, answered

Get in touch

How quickly can you respond after a storm?

We acknowledge enquiries the same day and arrange a site visit within two working days. After assessing the work, we typically provide the fixed written quotation within 24 hours. When the wind brings a tree down, we prioritise genuine emergencies and make the dangerous ones safe first.

Can you restore hedges damaged by coastal wind?

Yes. Beneath the Down, strong Channel winds can leave exposed hedges uneven and thin on one side. We restore an appropriate profile, reduce the height where required and remove the cuttings.

Do I need permission for tree work near the Bay?

Possibly. The Bay is a conservation area, so many trees there are protected and the council needs six weeks' written notice before work, in addition to any Tree Preservation Order requirements. We check what applies and manage the notice for you.

Which parts do you cover out west?

We cover Totland, Norton Green, Freshwater Bay, Colwell and the lanes towards Tennyson Down, as well as the wider West Wight area.

When is the best time of year for tree work?

It depends on the species, and we plan around bird nesting season (March to August). If a job should wait, we'll say so.

What's the difference between pruning and pollarding?

Pruning maintains the tree's natural shape and safety. Pollarding is a heavier, controlled cut that keeps the tree compact, used for certain species and tight spaces.

Do insurers and mortgage providers accept your reports?

Yes. We produce written survey reports for insurance, planning, and mortgage purposes.

What drives the price?

Size, condition, and access. You get a free written quote, fixed before work starts.
