Planned for greensand and coastal wind
The ground is loose, free-draining greensand and the bay is highly exposed. We reduce wind loading in suitable trees and specify posts and planting for soil that can shift.
Lake, Yaverland and the streets behind the bay, where the wind comes straight off the Channel. Same-day enquiry acknowledgement, with free site visits arranged within two working days.
Sandown gardens are directly exposed to salt air and wind from the bay, while the coastal conditions can also drive rapid hedge growth. Most of the town sits on loose, free-draining greensand, which dries quickly and can provide less support to a root plate than clay. This increases the importance of assessing top-heavy trees before severe weather. We know the ground from Lake to the exposed gardens towards Yaverland and Culver, and manage growth before it obstructs access or loses its intended form.
Sandown Bay receives severe weather directly from the Channel. During Storm Eunice in 2022, the Island recorded the fastest gust then measured in England and trees fell across the bay. High winds exploit weak unions and heavy crowns, so we thin and reduce suitable trees before severe weather and clear trees or limbs that have already fallen or become suspended.
Many Sandown properties are holiday lets, where garden condition matters between guests. We work to agreed changeover windows, scheduling hedge cutting, clearance and final tidying so the property is ready before the next arrival.

Coastal hedges can grow rapidly in Sandown. Scheduled maintenance keeps them within the agreed height and profile before they obstruct access or become difficult to manage.
“Penny Tree team were very professional and friendly. They arrived when they said they would on time and left the area clean and tidy. I certainly will be calling them again.”

Yes. Sandown has a designated conservation area, and trees inside it are protected, so the council needs six weeks' written notice before the work starts. The same applies to any tree with a preservation order on it. We check whether your address falls inside the boundary, and if it does we handle the notice, the same as we deal with protected-tree paperwork elsewhere on the Island.
Yes. The bay is highly exposed, so storm damage is a regular part of our work. We clear fallen material, make suspended or split sections safe and then explain any further work the remaining tree requires.
Yes. Coastal conditions can drive vigorous growth. We can reduce the hedge to an agreed profile and schedule maintenance to keep it controlled through the season.
No. We work exclusively on the Isle of Wight, which supports reliable local response times.
Pruning maintains the tree's natural shape and safety. Pollarding is a heavier, controlled cut that keeps the tree compact, used for certain species and tight spaces.
